Saturday, June 25
Pastured Poultry
10am - Noon | David Stevens
Come out and learn the pastured poultry system of raising your own meat chickens. The system employs a mobile, bottomless field pen which is moved daily to new pasture. The pen protects the birds from predators while still allowing them to receive exercise, fresh air and the ability to forage for food while distributing their manure across the pasture. Topics covered will include breed selection, brooder design and use, disease management, mobile pen design and butchering.

A Morning Devoted to Roses

Let’s indulge in Roses, the flower where heaven meets Earth. We will cover the history, uses, and culture. Hands on rose activities include picking, making an infusion, and a distillation, if there are enough to fill the still!

Lavender: Natures Panacea

Lavender heals more than you know, and there are a few varieties you can grow here. We will cover the history, uses, culture, and indulge in many lavender remedies. If the timing is right, we may even distill lavender, demonstrating how the essential oil is captured. You will leave this class RELAXED!

Come enjoy explore the flavors of our pepper patch. We will cover variety selection, soil preparation, plant culture, and preservation from salsa to freezing. Sample from the 28 varieties we are growing and learn how to roast peppers over a fire.

Tomato Tasting: A definition of Summer!

Enjoy the bounty of our tomato field. We will cover variety selection, soil preparation, trellising options as well as a taste test of our 20 varieties from heirlooms to the latest hybrids. We will also discuss how to can tomatoes including juice, paste, BBQ and pasta sauce.

Elderberries, the Medicine Chest of the Folk People

This wild berry is indigenous to most of the northern countries, esteemed by many cultures for it’s exceptional and versatile medicinal uses. We will cover the history and uses of this plant, gather some elderberries and make some syrup for you to take home.

Learn the basics of fermentation as we make a batch of Sauerkraut together. You will make enough to take a quart home with you!

Garlic Planting Time

Learn how to grow garlic just in time to plant your own. Garlic is a biennial which is planted in the fall and harvest the following summer. We will cover variety selection, soil preparation, planting, harvesting and storage.
